In the present context, where education is highly technical, competitive, and textbook-oriented, education of the heart is mostly neglected. and shall strive to secure this true education to an individual where she can proudly claim that she is educated both in her mind and heart.Įducation which includes education on both the dimensions (heart & mind) makes an individual not only intellectually sound but also socially productive. The education system shall do away with the utilitarian approach where the only aim of education is to get jobs etc. The ideal values sought to be secured to an educated individual are completely absent and this has manifested itself in the form of hate crimes, terrorism, crimes against humanity, etc. Unfortunately, today Education has been reduced to just learning of predefined facts. are directly comes from the heart, there is no mind-led concept here. To establish some values of life like religiousness, nationality, Independence, etc.Educating the mind makes us only a machine-like robot, which doesn’t have any kindness, sincerity, love, hate, etc.The mind of conscience is very necessary for this sense. To take the right decision- The right decision can take with the help of both mind and heart. We must listen to our hearts, re-learn what we think we know, and encourage people around us to think and behave differently, to behave compassionately. We must bring together knowledge, compassion, and mindfulness synergistically so that we are developing a more accurate understanding of the world around us. Similarly, Hitler or Osama Bin laden were instructively educated but without the education of heart and thus proved dangerous for humanity. Not just due to their intellect but because of their humanism, their ability to connect with the people. APJ Abdul Kalam, Nelson Mandela, all of them made a place in the hearts of people. APJ Kalam was not only a great scientist but also a President who connected with people emotionally. In contemporary times great players like Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu have emerged successful because of the value-education provided by their coaches. Value Education provided by great teachers like ‘Aristotle’, ‘Plato’, ‘Ramkrishna Paramhansa’, and ‘Swami Vivekananda’ to become wiser. Educating the mind and heart helps to bring wisdom and enlightenment among people. Developing cognition only will lead at best to making human robots not human beings. But, Educating the heart signifies developing empathy, compassion, respect for diversity and human dignity, love, respect for the law of land, etc. Educating only the mind means we are able to develop only cognition. Hence, education without values creates clever devils. Cyber Criminals and Terrorists these days are intellectually talented but illiterate when it comes to value education. Mere education of mind may build technical expertise but not humanity. Being educated is exposing oneself to several aspects of life. It not only enables us to take in information but also helps in understanding its worth. True education, which comes with an educated heart and educated mind, helps us to get rid of our prejudices, superstitions, etc, and to be rational human beings. It makes a person capable of decision-making in tune with the values, culture, morals, compassion, ethics, and needs of society. He works with intelligence for the benefit of everyone.Įducating the heart means imparting moral values which produce integrity, virtue, and character. A truly educated person is one who understands the purpose of creation. A person can be highly versed with many subjects and still come up very short in integrity and character. Values such as humanity, accountability, Integrity, confidence, courage must be imparted as a part of education.Įducation is not just confined to a defined set of syllabus or knowledge of certain fields or having degrees and diplomas. In order to ensure complete and holistic development, our education should be backed by values like empathy, compassion, rationality, etc. According to Aristotle, educating humans goes much beyond the cognitive aspect of learning. Enlightenment can be achieved only by educating both the mind as well as the heart. The objective of education is enlightenment. The above words of ‘Aristotle’ imply the importance of education with values. “Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all!”
